Item# C46

When I was growing up our drinking glasses were empty jelly glasses for the most part. Those non-famous brands of jellies and jams were on our kitchen table in the form of grape, strawberry, or plum. I came to think of plum as something plentiful and cheap. I longed for the exotic apricot, peach, elderberry or current. Exotic came once in awhile. Imagine the dismay of a 7 year old spreading the exotic tomato preserves on her morning toast? Not the sugary goodness expected to go with my Fruit Loops. Today finding a large cheap glass of plum jam is not possible where I live. Plum jam comes in tiny jars with name brand backing and "exotic" prices. What does this have to do with the painting? There is perspective at work here. That's plum jam on toast with coffee. A few decades ago it would represent the common or a cheap breakfast now .... maybe not so much. It's all perspective. (don't even get me started on the butter!)
