hyacinth macaw

Copyright by Mary HughesItem# C30

This painting is of the lovely and sweet Hyacinth Macaw. It's many good qualities such as it's beauty, gentle temperament and uniqueness have made this bird one of the most popular of the parrot family. Unfortunately it's popularity has also put it's species at risk. The largest flying parrot in the world sometimes weighing in at just under 5 lbs. and up to 40 inches long has long been captured and sold for an average of $10,000 or more. With the added insult of deforestation in Brazil it's numbers are depleting at an alarming rate.

Groups, organizations and individuals are selflessly working hard to change this trend and not let these beautiful, peaceful birds disappear from off the face of the earth.

Individuals who breed these sweethearts often say these birds are happier living in pairs and each bird at this point should be seen as breeding stock for the sake of it's species.
